The Role of Artificial Intelligence in English Language Pedagogy in India: Challenges and Opportunities

Abstract
The twenty-first century has witnessed the rapid emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) across all fields of human activity, from commerce and industry to health care, governance, and education. Within education, language teaching and learning represent a particularly dynamic arena for the integration of AI because language is simultaneously a skill, a medium of knowledge, and a social practice. This paper examines the role of AI in English language pedagogy in India, with particular attention to its challenges and opportunities. India provides a uniquely fertile ground for such an exploration, as English functions not as a first language but as a second or foreign language for the vast majority of its population, while at the same time it carries immense social, economic, and cultural capital.
