Major Water Disputes between India and Bangladesh: Analysis in the Contemporary Scenario

Abstract:
India and Bangladesh, two South Asian neighbours, share over 50 transboundary rivers, with the Ganges, Brahmaputra, and Teesta being the most significant. These rivers are critical for agriculture, energy production, and the livelihoods of millions of people. Despite the interdependence, water-sharing disputes have long been a source of tension, especially regarding the Teesta River. This paper explores the historical background of the India-Bangladesh water disputes, and analyses how the contemporary situation is shaped by political, environmental, and geopolitical factors. The paper aims to provide an analysis of the evolution of water disputes, with a focus on the Teesta River, and discuss possible future solutions in the context of regional cooperation and political changes.
