Abstract:  The 11th and last Nawab of Awadh, Wajid Ali Shah was dethroned on the plea of misgovernment by British Imperialist on 11th February, 1856 and was forced to leave his beloved place, Lucknow and sent to Calcutta, which was then a center of the British. Initially the Nawab was reluctant to stay here and tried his best to return to his place among his people, but finding no options, he had to settle here in Kolkata at Matiaburj. Following Nawab’s settlement here a huge number of people migrated to Matiaburj and decided to live here. Since than Nawab Wajid Ali Shah established his own mini-Lucknow in Matiaburj. Wajid Ali shah was a great lover of all sort of cultural activities. He was equally interested in the art of Architecture and constructed some Mosques, Imambargahs, residential buildings and Madrasas etc. Many of them have been destroyed but some sill stand tall and witness the artistic taste of the Last Nawab of Awadh.

This article to provide aspects of Wajid Ali shah’s contribution in this regard so that, his achievement may be brought into light for the readers and knowledge seekers.
