Abstract
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is changing higher education with new tools to improve teaching, learning, assessment, and research. This paper surveyed AI tools across five categories: (1) Generative AI and Writing Support, (2) Adaptive Learning Systems, (3) Assessment and Feedback Platforms, (4) Learning Analytics and Engagement Tools, and (5) Specialized Applications for STEM, Language, Research, and Accessibility. Case-based examples showed how tools like ChatGPT, Grammarly, Gradescope, ALEKS, and Canvas Analytics are being adopted by students and educators globally. Overall, AI tools can provide benefits for students and educators including personalized learning, faster and easier grading, improved academic writing, and supports for early interventions with possibly at-risk students. Nonetheless, using AI in higher education creates challenges related to academic integrity, algorithmic bias, ethical data privacy and protections, cost limitations, and use of AI tools by students without teaching in terms of over-reliance on automated systems. By promoting the rapid innovation with accountability, AI could enhance human learning outcomes and experiences in higher education through manifestations and application of artificial intelligence and intelligent tutoring for a new era of humanist educational experiences.
