Abstract
India’s agriculture is dominated by smallholders facing climate volatility, input inefficiencies, post-harvest losses, and price uncertainty. Artificial Intelligence (AI)—combined with satellites, IoT, and digital public infrastructure—is reshaping agronomic decision-making, risk management, and market access. This paper reviews India’s AI-in-agriculture landscape (2021–2025), synthesizes evidence from field pilots (e.g., AI sowing advisories, dairy analytics, crop insurance), maps the enabling policy stack (Digital Agriculture Mission 2021–25, AgriStack, e-NAM, Kisan Drones, and data protection law), and proposes a practical adoption and governance framework for scalable, inclusive impact. We find promising yield, efficiency, and logistics gains, but highlight adoption barriers (farmer capabilities, data interoperability, last-mile connectivity) and governance needs (privacy, consent, algorithmic accountability). The paper closes with policy and implementation recommendations tailored to Indian states and FPOs.
